Famara is the epic centre of Lanzarote hang gliding. The famous Famara ridge run is the main reason many pilots visit the island. This flying route starts just outside the old Lanzarote capital of Teguise and goes all the way to the Northern tip of the island in Orzola. The route runs along a dramatic cliff ridge reaching over 600 metres above sea level. A good part of this cliff route runs along the sea.
Flying the Famara ridge run:
When the wind is from the North to North West the ridge run is on. There are two take offs but only one of them allows a top landing, the more dependable higher take off requires a bottom landing due to very dangerous ridge rotor.
Once in the air you have to pass one main obstacle, which is easy on the right day, then you are into smooth ridge lift air. The main cliff starts behind Famara beach, this is where the amazing views really start. From here on you can see both west and east coasts of the island. As you travel north you also get an amazing view of the island of Graciosa and some little used beautiful beaches at the bottom of the ‘El Risco’ cliffs. As you carry on North you will probably see people watching you and waving from the Cesar Manrique house built into the top of the cliffs. Then it is on to the Northern rock formation peninsular and even out so sea. The whole run is one of the most beautiful hang gliding routes and pilots come from all over Europe and the World to experience it.
